Canadiens Rumors: Could Two Montreal Players Become Trade Candidates?
The season just started for the Montreal Canadiens, but two names keep coming up in trade rumors for very different reasons.
Veteran winger Brendan Gallagher remains a heartbeat player for the Montreal Canadiens, while rising defenseman Jayden Struble is in a very different type of situation with Montreal, according to the Montreal Gazette's Stu Cowan.
This game has some early juice. Very fast pace so far, and Brendan Gallagher just sent Josh Mahura very awkwardly into the end wall, which drew a crowd.

Gallagher’s role and contract point to a Montreal finish
Cowan’s take on one of the names is straightforward: Brendan Gallagher isn’t going anywhere.
At 33, he still brings scoring touch, hard minutes, and daily standards in the room. With his deal running through 2026-27, there’s no pressure to move him for cap relief, nor a compelling development case to push him aside when his presence can steady younger forwards as they grow into larger roles.
Struble’s name pops up
Cowan also fielded questions about Jayden Struble as a potential trade chip. Could he fetch help where the roster needs it most? Possibly, but context matters.
The Montreal Canadiens have already moved three young defensemen over the last 14 months, David Reinbacher is working back from another injury, and this is the final season of Mike Matheson’s contract. That combination argues for caution.
Montreal can listen without rushing, and only engage if the return clearly upgrades the top of the lineup rather than nibbling at the margins.

"[St-Louis] was calling guys in the summer and said 'I would take our 7 D versus anyone in the league.' I agree with that. We have some really good young talent, we have some good older veterans. We have a good mix of skill and hard nose."… pic.twitter.com/R9dazeRCdq
For now, expect the Montreal Canadiens to keep Gallagher right where he is and treat Struble as part of a deeper plan, one that protects their blue-line pipeline while staying open to the right trade if it truly moves the needle.
