Robert Thomas 'Most Likely' Gets Moved This Summer, 6 Destinations Listed
Despite the multitude of rumors at the trade deadline, Robert Thomas wasn't moved. The player himself spoke out on Monday, telling Jeff Marek on The Sheet that he was never asked to waive his no-trade clause. However, that doesn't mean the St. Louis Blues won't try again after the season.
In fact, according to insider Pierre LeBrun, in The Athletic, a trade is 'most likely' to come this summer.
Alex Steen officially takes over for Doug Armstrong as GM of the Blues on July 1. Whether Robert Thomas will still be a member of the St. Louis Blues by then remains to be seen.
Given the depth of the trade conversations that occurred in the lead-up to the deadline, the expectation is that those conversations will pick up again in the offseason as the Blues try to retool their roster. There are lots of possibilities there, and I think Thomas most likely gets moved this summer.
He goes on to name six teams he feels should be in the running for Thomas this offseason, including two who made a big run at him before the deadline.
"The Buffalo Sabres and Utah Mammoth may circle back, but the playoffs also have a way of bringing other teams into the fold. Do the Detroit Red Wings feel they need to take a run at Thomas depending on how the playoffs go? The Montreal Canadiens? Boston Bruins? Los Angeles Kings?"
All of those teams are looking for a high-end top-six center to take them to the next level.
Thomas was clear in speaking with Marek and his compatriot Greg Wyshynski that he has not asked to be traded. But if the Blues really do tear it down with more big names moving out, will the 26-year-old really want to spend his prime years with a rebuilding, losing squad?
Thomas has another five years to run on his contract at an $8.125 million AAV. Given where the top-end salaries are headed with the constantly soaring salary cap, that is a downright bargain and teams will continue to try their best to pry him loose from the Blues.
Captain Brayden Schenn and defenseman Justin Faulk were dealt by St. Louis at the deadline, and more should be coming this summer.
