Trade Deadline Aftermath: 2 Islanders Dangled in Deals, One Blocked Trade with NTC

New York Islanders forward Anthony Duclair celebrates a goal with teammates

The New York Islanders made a big addition at the trade deadline, landing veteran center Brayden Schenn from the St. Louis Blues in an 11th-hour deal just before the 3pm ET buzzer. Schenn had to be convinced by GM Mathieu Darche & head coach Patrick Roy, however, to waive his no-trade clause before the deal was consummated.

The Islanders, as it turns out, didn't have the same luck with their own player, forward Anthony Duclair. According to insider David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, he refused to waive his full no-trade clause for a deal the Islanders were considering earlier in the season. Duclair's clause reverts to a 16-team no-trade list as of July 1st.

Pagnotta writes that both Duclair and Maxim Shabanov were being dangled in deals at the deadline, but they weren't able to pull anything off on those fronts.

Shabanov, 25, will be a restricted free agent after completing his first NHL season at the end of the year. The Russian was a coveted free agent that the Islanders were able to sign last year, but his rookie season hasn't been too overwhelming, with just four goals and 16 points in 40 games played. He has also been a healthy scratch on numerous occasions.

Anthony Duclair blocked deal with no-trade clause

Duclair, a 12-year veteran who has struggled mightily since coming to the Islanders two years ago, has 12 goals and 26 points in 56 games, after just seven goals and 11 points last season in 44 games. He finished last year in Patrick Roy's doghouse, and with multiple healthy scratches again this year, it's not been too much better.

He played less than nine minutes in the Islanders' game this past Saturday against the San Jose Sharks.

The 30-year-old winger still has two years to run on his contract with a $3.5 million AAV. It's intriguing that he blocked a trade, as you'd think he'd want to get a new lease of life somewhere and break out of Roy's doghouse.
