Report: Ottawa Senators trading goaltender Mads Sogaard
Keep an eye on the Ottawa Senators crease this summer, and some fresh talent could be on the way.
After what was a very disappointing finish to their season after a quick first-round Stanley Cup Playoff exit, roster changes are on the way this offseason, and apparently, it all starts in net.
Bruce Garrioch: Re Mads Sogaard: The expectation is he won’t be back, but the Senators may give him a qualifying offer to retain his rights. The club tried to trade him at the deadline last year - Ottawa Citizen (5/19)
Sogaard, 25, is a pending free agent and as Garrioch mentions, is likely going to receive a qualifying offer, to then be dealt. The former second-round pick appeared in two games for the Senators this past season and spent most of the year playing in Belleville with the AHL Senators.
Sogaard went 1-0-0 with Ottawa, posting a .833 save percentage in the very small sample. Meanwhile in Belleville, the Danish netminder went 7-13-4, with a 3.69 goals against average, and .874 save percentage.
Obviously they won't get much for Sogaard straight up, but if they package him, the Sens may be better off. As far as teams looking for goaltender depth this summer, those teams include the San Jose Sharks, Edmonton Oilers, Pittsburgh Penguins, and St. Louis Blues.
