Blockbuster Trade: Red Wings' Sebastian Cossa to Utah for the 23rd OA Pick in 2026

The Detroit Red Wings traded their prospect Sebastian Cossa, who was ready for a full-time NHL role, to the Utah Mammoth for the 23rd overall pick.

Sebastian Cossa should've earned a shot at a spot in the NHL last season, but was told to stand pat as he backstopped one of the best teams in the AHL, the Grand Rapids Griffins.

This move allows the Red Wings to move up Michal Postava in the depth chart and gives Cossa a chance to find a full-time job in the NHL, in the Western Conference with the Mammoth.

He'll have a chance to play in the playoffs, as the team established itself as a contender, despite being an easy-out in the first round of the playoffs.

The return for Cossa, who was originally selected 15th overall in 2021, was the 23rd OA pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.

Cossa was one of the Red Wings' best prospects in 2025-26, with a record of 26-8-4, a 2.33 goals against average, and a .915 save percentage.

The 15th overall in 2021 has joined Amadeus Lombardi in the Yzerplan as another prospect traded in recent days.

The Red Wings Select JP Hurlbert 23rd Overall in 2026

With the 23rd overall pick in 2026, the team selected JP Hurlbert from the Kamloops Blazers. Hurlbert is an American-born forward who played one season in the WHL with the Blazers, scoring 97 points (42 goals, 55 assists). Hurlbert added 3 points (1 goal, 2 assists) in 4 playoff games in 2025-26.

The Red Wings continue to add to one of the deepest prospect pools in the league with this pick.
