The long, drawn-out Mason McTavish drama has finally come to an end, as the Anaheim Ducks have traded him to the St. Louis Blues for the 15th and 29th selections in Friday night's first round of the NHL Draft.

McTavish has been on the block after a disappointing season in Anaheim on the first year of a six-year deal with a $7 million AAV.

Just 24 hours earlier, reports started to emerge of "advanced discussions" on a trade with either the New York Rangers or the Blues. It's St. Louis that pulls it off.

Ducks are 'far from done' despite trading McTavish, armed with more cap space

Pierre LeBrun reports that this deal was contingent on Nikita Klepov being available at the 15th pick. That couldn't be confirmed until after the 14th pick was confirmed. But he also adds that the Ducks still have something big up their sleeve to add to their roster.

"Anaheim is not selling by any means, the Ducks have more cap flexibility now and aim to use it to improve the team this year. They’re far from done."

McTavish came into the 2025-26 campaign off a contentious offseason as an RFA last summer, as negotiations with the Ducks on a contract got into a nasty standoff, which led to the player holding out from the beginning of training camp.

Eventually, the six-year deal was signed. But he then suffered through a middling 17-goal, 41-point season, and even faced a number of healthy scratches, including during the playoffs. But with a high draft pedigree (3rd overall in 2021), and still only 23 years old, this is a nice pickup for the Blues with some good upside.
