SIGNED: Boone Jenner Signs With Eastern Conference Team

The Washington Capitals have signed Boone Jenner after he was first linked to the team earlier in free agency.

Washington has signed Jenner to a four-year, $23 million contract, with senior vice president and general manager Chris Patrick announcing the deal.

The contract carries a $5.75 million average annual value.

Jenner spent his entire NHL career with the Columbus Blue Jackets before this move, serving as captain and becoming the franchise’s all-time leader in games played. He had 13 goals and 25 assists for 38 points in 67 games last season.

Why Jenner Fits The Capitals

This is a pretty clear identity move for Washington. Jenner gives the Capitals a veteran forward who can play center or wing, handle hard minutes, take faceoffs, and add some bite to the middle of the lineup.

He is not being brought in as a pure offensive splash, but there is still useful production here. Jenner has 212 goals, 209 assists, and 421 points in 808 career NHL games, and the Capitals are betting that his leadership and two-way game will age well enough over the four-year term.

This adds to a very busy last couple of weeks for the Capitals.
