3 Potential Free-Agent Destinations for Alexandar Georgiev

The NHL's free-agent market is very thin when it comes to experienced goaltenders who are left unsigned, as Alexandar Georgiev is one of the few who are left without a contract over one month in.

Georgiev, 29, appeared in 49 games last season, split between the Colorado Avalanche and San Jose Sharks. He posted a 7-19-4 record with the Sharks, after being dealt for Mackenzie Blackwood, who turned things around in a major way with the Avs. Georgiev's 3.88 goals against average was one of the highest in the league, however, he's shown he's capable of being a number-one goaltender, who is now in line for a bounce back season.

Georgiev will have suitors in the KHL, there's no doubt about that, but at the end of the day, he'd like to sign on with an NHL franchise and carry on his career. The Russian netminder has dressed in 303 NHL games, collecting a record of 151-108-26, along with a very respectable .903 save percentage, and 2.98 goals against average, and 15 shutouts.

As far as teams looking for goaltending depth this late in the offseason, keep an eye on the Edmonton Oilers,Calgary Flames, and Toronto Maple Leafs. Ideally, each of these three teams has an experienced number three goaltender, who is a security blanket, and available in case some injuries occur.

The Oilers are in the mix for another goaltender, and have been all summer, with Tristan Jarry of the Penguins being someone else they've targeted as well.

Georgiev, at this point, could be destined for Russia at least to start the season, and then we'll have to wait and see what his release clause is like in his contract, and if a team takes a flyer on his services.
