Rasmus Andersson Breaks Silence on Trade Rumors With Surprising Statement

Rasmus Andersson, Calgary Flames

Just when it seemed that Rasmus Andersson had one foot out the door in Calgary, the veteran Flames defenseman broke his silence on the year-long trade rumors surrounding him. And he did so with one surprising admission.

Surrounded by media on Tuesday, the pending UFA had this to say:

When asked about GM Craig Conroy's comments that they're not closing the door on re-signing Andersson, the nine-year veteran (all with the Flames), agreed.

“Ya, for sure. I’ve grown up in the city... I’ve loved every second of it, that’ll never change,” Andersson said. “Now, it’s the business side of it. Is it smart of me to re-sign now after last season? I don’t know. I read all season about how much I sucked, so it is what it is. I just have to come out of the gates hot and worry about myself and get the team in the best position possible.”

He also vehemently denied that he would only want to get traded to the Vegas Golden Knights, a rumor that was hot and heavy after the end of last season.

“The thing that bothers you is fake information that comes out. I saw some reports that I would only sign in one team, and this and that," Andersson said. "I mean, nothing could be further from the truth. (GM Craig Conroy) and I have had a few conversations over the summer, and I would never handcuff him and give him one team.”

Andersson is going into the final season of his six-year, $27.3 million contract ($4.55 million AAV), and can become an unrestricted free agent after the season.

In 536 career games with the Flames, he has 231 points and 889 blocked shots. He hasn't averaged less than 22 minutes a night in the past four seasons.
