NHL Rumors: Stars & Jason Robertson Nowhere Close In Contract Talks

Dallas Stars forward Jason Robertson skates during 2025 game.

The Dallas Stars want Jason Robertson locked in for the long haul, but multiple reports say talks are nowhere near the finish line.

General manager Jim Nill has said the goal is to sign him, yet the two sides are still searching for a number that works in the NHL's rising cap world.

Why Talks Are Stalled

Dallas is believed to prefer a deal that comes in under Mikko Rantanen on average annual value, which effectively sets a ceiling for their forward group. Robertson, coming off foot surgery last year and aiming to stack a big season now, has every incentive to wait until his leverage peaks.

He is signed through this season with one more year left on his current contract, so there is time, and league insiders note the Stars even tested the market last summer before deciding he was worth more to them than anything offered.

This season, the 26-year-old has recorded just three goals and 14 points across 16 games played, while also averaging a career-high 20:28 time on ice.

What It Means for Dallas

The Thomas Harley extension showed the Stars will pay core pieces. The challenge is allocation. Dallas has meaningful money coming open in the near term, but they also have veteran decisions ahead.

If Robertson pushes back into 40-goal form, the price climbs. If talks drift into his RFA summer with arbitration rights in play, that can reset the number again.
