Former Islanders Captain Anders Lee Signs With Utah Mammoth

The New York Islanders are another team in the Metropolitan Division who have lost their longtime captain today.

The 14-year Islanders veteran's contract expired, leaving him free to sign where he wishes in free agency. Leaving general manager Matthieu Darche without a captain to lead the team in his absence.

According to The Athletic's Michael Russo on X, the Minnesota Wild are one-team who won't be taking a chance at signing the UFA.

The Wild are going to have to find a solution to losing Mats Zuccarello to the Los Angeles Kings, leaving a hole in the top-six.  While Lee may not have the same kind of skill set that Zuccarello had, he plays a fierce two-way game and isn't a stranger to postseason play, being a part of teams coached by Barry Trotz.

He's played a total of 46 playoff games as an Islander, scoring 21 points (10 goals, 11 assists) and 48 penalty minutes.

Lee has played all 14-years of his career on Long Island, a total of 923 games, scoring 549 points (308 goals, 241 assists), and could find himself in a leadership role elsewhere in the league.

Teams who value power forwards will prioritize a player like Lee

"A hulking winger who makes his living around the net, Lee appears set to move on from the Islanders," The Athletic's Chris Johnston wrote in his latest free agent rankings, in which Lee slots as No. 4. "He's a durable, hard-working player and remains a threat to score on the power play, which accounts for 30 of the 124 goals he scored across the past five seasons. Lee brings leadership intangibles, having worn the 'C' on Long Island, and profiles as a power forward who is tough to contain physically."

Lee was selected 152nd overall in the sixth round of the 2009 NHL draft and played hockey for Notre Dame before making the jump to play in the league as an Islander.

Signs in Utah

It was reported by NHL Insider Frank Seravalli that Anders Lee has signed with the Utah Mammoth for an AAV of $5.4 million over the next three years.

The Mammoth are loading up on talent after acquiring Vincent Trocheck in trade from the New York Rangers.
