TRADE: Oilers Acquire Devon Levi From Sabres

The Edmonton Oilers are taking their goalie swing, acquiring Devon Levi from the Buffalo Sabres in a deal that gives the 24-year-old a fresh start.

The Sabres announced that they acquired a third-round pick in the 2028 NHL Draft from Edmonton in exchange for Levi and a seventh-round pick in the 2028 NHL Draft.

Edmonton gets a young goalie who had already been linked to them before the move.

Elliotte Friedman recently reported that Edmonton had done “real research” on Levi during draft weekend, so this did not exactly come out of nowhere, even if the return is still interesting for a goalie who was once viewed as a major piece of Buffalo’s future.

Why The Oilers Are Betting On Levi

Levi has 39 games of NHL experience and previously showed high-end form in the AHL, including a 25-win season with a .919 save percentage in 2024-25.

The fit makes sense because the Oilers needed another goalie option with upside, not just another recycled backup.

Levi is still young enough to develop, and his contract is manageable after he signed a two-year deal with Buffalo last summer worth $812,500 per season.

For Buffalo, the move clears up a crowded crease and turns Levi into a better pick than a waiver-risk headache.

For Edmonton, it is a low-cost swing on a former top prospect goalie who could still become much more than his current trade price suggests.
